Inside is also the Memorial Hall where fallen Alumni are remembered.

Midshipmen live predominantly two to a room.

The 300 acres of beautifully manicured grounds are dotted with commemorative features and artifacts steeped in Naval history.

New York City, New York

Probably the most significant Icon of the city.

The Lower Manhattan skyline.

Ground Zero. The most moving part of being here was not only seeing the picture displays and memorials around the site but to stand quietly and contemplate the unimaginable horror of what occurred. Despite lots of ongoing controversy as to how the site should be redeveloped there does now seem to be a consensus plan for completion in 2010. Freedom Tower will clearly dominate the new skyline.

New wharf development along the East River.

Times Square in the evening rush hour. A total blitz on the senses!

The passage through the East River, joining Long Island Sound with NY Harbor, must be done with the tide that can run up to 6 knots at times. Unfortunately it was cold and grey .

The United Nations Bldg.

Apartments along the Manhattan shore with the Empire State Building in the background. Half an hour after we left the East River a small plane crashed into one of these apartment blocks and the Coast Guard closed the river to all traffic.

Exiting the East River at the southern tip of Manhattan. The famous Brooklyn Bridge is in the background.

Ellis Island, where virtually all migrants were processed on arrival in the New World.

Farewell to New York

Shortly after this was taken the weather deteriorated, with heavy rain, no visibility and 25 knots of wind. Such is life!
